Rude, rough, and radical, this aggressive split coil design will chomp its way through any live or recorded mix. The NJ4SE uses the same hand wound pattern as our other NJs, but is given its midrange heft through the use of a finer enamel wire. The character of this pickup comes down to a pronounced lower midrange and slightly muted high end, which makes it exceptionally suited for finger style players who might want a solo bridge pickup that has a bark that bites. The NJ4SE is bred for the stage, where its hum-canceling clarity and boisterous presence will slaughter any noise that dare desecrate the circumference of its sonic facility.
Technical Details:
History: This pickup's design stems from the pursuit of eradicating all shy and wilting bass tone from the live setting. We at Nordstrand believe in the maintenance of bold pronunciation, and so in order to achieve this, we did our best to create the Rottweiler of bass pickups…literally. The techs at Nordstrand siphoned the spirit of Carey Nordstrand's late pup, Maya, a Boxer-Rottie mix, and embedded it into the fabric of the NJ4SE's central character. This K-9 had a particular reverence for spatial chaos and impact—a whirlwind of energy akin to that of freeform progressive jazz—and so it is no wonder that the pickup which contains her spirit has the ability to bludgeon audiences with jazzy vigor and relentless articulation.

“When I need some bite, I can dig in and poof, it’s there. When I want some woody reggae-like beef it’s there. I’ve even been able to dial up p-bass tones using just the front pickup and cranking the tone up! The best part is though, no matter what tone is dialed up, it’s still from this beautiful core, generated by those sweet pups.” - Billy Carrión Jr.

"The NJ4SE pickup is the stand-out of the three. Where the NJ4 and NJ4SV arrive at a tone that is very traditional in nature, the SE goes beyond the "classic" jazz bass tone. Because SEs are wound differently, they feature a slight "bump" in the midrange that the other two sets do not prominently feature. Players who are looking for a jazz bass tone that gives them "a little more" tend to gravitate toward the SE set. SEs are notorious for being big, warm, and fat, but still retain clarity and detail. Unlike other vintage pickups that claim to be "warm", but also end up being muddy and lifeless, the SEs retain warmth and punch while still allowing you to cut through in the mix..."
